Community Economic Development Program (CED)

The definition of community economic development (CED) is broad.  CED is about action in the community.  HCC wants to:

  • Protect low-income co-ops
  • Cultivate local economies
  • Revitalize blocks in the Clinton/Hell's Kitchen neighborhood
  • Foster entrepreneurship and self-reliance among residents
  • Support community leaders
  • Prevent displacement from existing homes
  • Create non-profits and for-profits to address un-met needs on the West Side

HCC has offered legal representation for over two decades to address the needs of Hell’s Kitchen/Clinton’s under-served population.  Now, as large real estate developments increase pressures on the West Side of Manhattan, HCC sees a need for a new community economic development program offering expanded legal services.

Examples of the expanded legal services include: reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts and leases, representing clients buying real estate, and non-profit organizations in administrative or regulatory proceedings, providing start-up assistance related to legal issues for new businesses, and assisting with corporate documents and business operations for established businesses.

Are you trying to do something positive in the community?  Start something new!  HCC's CED attorneys offer legal advice and assistance to various individuals and organizations.  For example, HCC may be able to help you start a new non-profit organization on the West Side.  The CED program is based on the priorities and visions of the individuals we assist.   HCC clients can come to our office, describe an issue that influences their lives and propose their ideas to resolve it.  Then, we work together to institute a practical solution, such as a non-profit organization or an affordable housing development that both fulfills a need and helps HCC reach its over-arching goal of advancing social and economic justice.

Through this new CED project, HCC has found another way to prevent displacement and to create sustainable development opportunities on the far West Side.
