HCC provides free legal services to eligible low- and moderate-income tenants, tenant associations, HDFC shareholders and other community organizations located in the Hell's Kitchen/Clinton neighborhood (34th to 72nd Street, from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River). If you do not reside in our catchment area or meet our income eligibility criteria, please come instead to our Legal Clinic.
HCC represents clients dealing with housing and housing related issues. HCC has experience working with clients in these areas:
- Domestic Violence
- Public Benefits Issues
- Community Economic Development (CED)
- Immigration Issues
- Mental Health Issues
- Zoning Enforcement
- Consumer Law
Our staff meets individually with potential clients to determine eligibility and the extent of legal services required (please see our page on income eligibility). If you have a legal question, need advice or have received court papers and live in the neighborhood, come see us during our walk-in intake hours.
When attending an intake session, please make sure to bring all relevant information such as court papers, leases, notices received and proof of rental payments. In addition, if you need repairs, please bring a list of those as well. You do not need to have been served court papers in order to come into intake with a housing problem.
To insure income eligibility, you must also provide us proof of income for all household members (such as tax returns, public assistance, pay stubs, Social Security award letters, etc.). Individuals who do not qualify for legal assistance should come to our Legal Clinic and receive free legal information from our pro bono attorneys.
Finally, you can be assured that anything you tell the attorneys and tenant organizers at HCC is fully confidential. We cannot disclose information unless you give us permission.
We at HCC look forward to helping you in the near future. Please understand that gathering the necessary information before you come in will save you and HCC staff time so that we can provide you with the best legal information and assistance possible.
