In April, we were honored to collaborate with tenant leaders and community organizations across the city to host a town hall on the Mayor’s housing priorities. The event provided a critical forum for tenants to engage directly with policymakers from HPD and the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants.
Building on the nearly 2,000 tenant stories shared through the city’s rental ripoff hearings, we presented a unified set of demands developed by more than 20 tenant organizations for inclusion in the hearings report and the Mayor’s housing plan. We were proud that WSNA Leader, Sandy Jean-Bart, presented on the need to deepen affordability within HPD term sheets, highlighting the importance of ensuring publicly supported housing remains accessible to those most in need.
Our message was clear: tenants need meaningful accountability for negligent landlords and a stronger housing code enforcement system. As the Mayor’s housing plan takes shape, it is essential that tenant voices are not only heard, but reflected in the policies that follow.
